Which song is he talking about?

ED PARK • Want to hear a really sloppy record? It's a good song, but the recording's a mess. The drums consistently drag the rhythm; the bass player isn't quite sure how his part is supposed to go...—Douglas Wolk, "The Death of Mistakes Means the Death of Rock" http://youtu.be/T3znOTuT4K8

Killing Joke

MOLLIE WILSON REILLY • Did anybody else see McCartney on The Colbert Report Wednesday night? It was a pretaped interview, and it was...uncomfortable. At least, I thought so -- what do you think? The Colbert Report Get More: Colbert Report Full Episodes,The Colbert Report on Facebook,Video Archive Why so prickly, Sir Paul? Where's that sense of humor? And why is the editing so choppy? At first it seemed so disjointed I thought maybe it was a spoof interview -- either they were matching answers with different questions (as they sometimes do on these humorous TV programs), or perhaps -- given the constant [...]

Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Starr & Young

DEVIN McKINNEY  •  Another addition to the growing video library here at your favorite YouTube annex: Neil Young performing a Beatles classic to wind up a recent Dublin date. http://youtu.be/Od5MaiiUjtY Though Neil has never done much to associate himself with the Fabs, this song choice makes sense in at least one regard: I have always felt that the Young-Nitzsche "Expecting to Fly" (from the 1967 Buffalo Springfield Again) was a direct homage to/steal from Sgt. Pepper, particularly its royal finale. (And what about "Broken Arrow," from the same album? Or "Country Girl," from CSNY's Deja Vu? And pretty much the whole of [...]

Beatlespooks, Ch. 1: The Phantom Guardsman of Strawberry Fields

Frames from the “Strawberry Fields” promo film, shot January 30, 1967, in Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent. DEVIN McKINNEY  •      At first, Paul is sanguine, at his ease, perhaps even lofty on teasmoke.                   But what does he spy, reflected in the varnished piano of a Kentish night?   A Beatle aide caught in pass, or a vigilant spirit on eternal watch?         May we say, you or I, what so widens his eye?

Get Back on the rooftop

By |2022-07-24T12:45:59-07:00January 31, 2008|1969, concert, Get Back, Let It Be|

Today's the 39th anniversary of the rooftop concert, perhaps the most splendid public nuisance in human history. I have it on Vigotone's As Nature Intended--anybody know a better source? While you're thinking, here's an outdoor version of "Get Back," audio only but we can all imagine it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txk0j8JVKbI

Video: You Can’t Do That

Apparently this performance--of "You Can't Do That," one of my all-time favorite Beatles tunes--was deleted from A Hard Day's Night. You can understand why; it's Lennon at his most creepily aggressive (bested only by "Run For Your Life" off Rubber Soul). Am I forgetting any others? https://vimeo.com/540777186
