MIKE GERBER • In thinking about Devin’s great post on favorite Beatle micro-moments, last week’s “Breakfast with the Beatles” reminded me of one…which may or may not exist? I only doubt it because I can’t seem to find corroboration via Google—which is, I suppose, a comment on what we’ve become (yes, I’m including you whether you like it or not).
Anyway, it’s an extra “something” in “I Want to Hold Your Hand”—a ghostly buried response that occurs at about 1:23 in this video.
Do you hear it, too? Maybe come over to where I’m standing…or hunch down to my height…Is this an authentic I Want to Hold Your Hand recording error?
It sounds like a vocal double tracking error or a little snippet of something from a punch in overdub. I think. Definitely a voice, sounds like half of a syllable. To me, anyway.
Hmmm – I tend to agree with what the “Beatles Anomalies List” has to say on this topic:
After the word “something”, a voice whispers “something” (right channel). John, as ever, seems to forget the vocals and ad-libs “balum-a-lumba Haaand”.

John should’ve ad-libbed every song; his language is easily as entertaining as English.

@Michael. I have plenty of micro-moments to share if you are willing to make a Part II post about them at any time. One thing before I post three of them, one of my sub-trades, working in informatics, is audio restoring, so I’m sure you would be amused listening to some of my “unearthing” of quite a few micro-moments, either, noises, voices, yeling, and the like, which are well buried into the mixes.
Ok, here’s one. For years I wondered what the heck someone was whispering in LIB (single version) at roughly 1:07, just when Paul finishes singing “and though they may be parted” (on the right channel you can hear a faint whispering). It’s none other than Paul himself, during overdubs saying very quietly “distortion”.
Another fave of mine is the “noise” heard at 0:08 again in LIB (this time album version), absurdly “cleaned up” for the 2009 remasters, so you’ll have to check the 1987 CD to catch it.
And of course, one of my all time favorites, at 0:41 into “I Need You”, the cracking noise George makes on his guitar after the last fill (right channel).

Another one for you Michael, give it a listen to the very first few bars of Ticket to Ride’s opening, before the drum roll (ONLY in the original 1965 stereo mix), you’ll find some amusing stuff going on over there.
This reminds me of the end of Buddy Holly’s “I’m Gonna Love You, Too” where a live cricket can be heard.
It had apparently hopped into the studio’s small, tiled echo chamber during the recording session. The producer didn’t notice the sound until playback. Holly and the group decided to leave it in the song as it was on beat, and his band had only months earlier decided to call themselves The Crickets. So they saw the little guy as a good omen.
